Paul W.S. Anderson continues to roll along with his take on the Capcom franchise "Resident Evil." While the filmmaker has strived to set his films in a parallel universe to the games´ storyline and simply use familiar themes and characters to populate his films, "Resident Evil: Extinction" borrows heavily from the fourth game, "Resident Evil Code: Veronica" and the Mel Gibson blockbuster "The Road Warrior." Milla Jovovich resumes her career working for her husband, Anderson, and is once again cast as the uber zombie killing femme fatale Alice. The Umbrella Corporation continues to be the stories primary culprit behind all of the biohazard evil and some characters return after having a supporting role in the second film to create another connection between the films.

This third film has Alice (Jovovich) as a nomadic survivor of the zombie infestation. She has managed to survive out of the watchful eyes of satellites and away from human contact. It is revealed in this third film that Alice is actually a cloned creation that is being created as a super weapon by the Umbrella Corporation and may be their greatest military weapon and perhaps the best chance against defeating the zombie infestation that has occurred when another project of theirs went horribly awry during the first "Resident Evil" film. A ditch filled with Alice clones is shown and instead of the character portrayed as a survivor to a horrific event; she is simply another cog in the wheel of terror that keeps the "Resident Evil" films churning ahead.

Fates cross paths when Alice runs into a band of Raccoon City survivors that includes Claire Redfield (Ali Larter), Carlos Olivera (Oded Fehr) and L.J. (Mike Epps). Olivera and L.J. fought alongside Alice during "Resident Evil: Apocalypse" when the game "Resident Evil: Nemesis" was loosely adapted to the big screen. Claire Redfield is a familiar name for fans of the Capcom series and has appeared in a number of games in the long-running series and her brother Chris Redfield is another popular character. Redfield leads a large convoy of survivors that move from town to town looking for supplies and trying to survive as long as they can against the humans and other creatures that have been infected by the infection. With Umbrella introducing a new generation of zombies into the population, Alice decides she must use some newly discovered psychic powers to assault the Umbrella stronghold that is conveniently nearby in the desert.

"Resident Evil: Extinction" borrows a lot of elements from both the games and a few popular films. Much of the concept of Alice being a biologically engineered weapon comes from "Resident Evil Code: Veronica." Albert Wesker (Jason O´Mara) is prominently featured in both this film and that game and many plotlines are shared between the two stories. This continues to keep the "Resident Evil" films connected to the games, but forces a new storyline that has fresh stories to tell for those familiar with the games and their associated plots. Popular films are also borrowed heavily from during "Resident Evil: Extinction." The concept of a nomadic desert convoy should seem quite familiar to "Mad Max" films and there are many similarities between the two convoys. Additionally, George A. Romero´s "Day of the Dead" and the iconic zombie character "Bub" is familiar ground in this film.

I enjoyed the new change of scenery for the film and having Alice and other survivors move away from formerly populace city locations and moving into the desert. This allowed for some wonderful tension as the survivors investigated isolated towns and buildings and a definite sense of abandonment and loneliness could be felt during the film. The zombie crows were another very nice touch, as was having the armored convoy forced to travel infected roads and survive against greater numbers of zombies. Russell Mulcahy brings back a little more horror elements to this third film after the mostly action centric second film. The pacing was good and this was easily the best filmed picture of the trilogy.

The story betrayed the new location and direction taken by "Resident Evil: Extinction." The concept of Alice being such a coveted asset by Umbrella when they had a number of similar specimens growing didn´t seem worth the effort of creating a band of super-zombies to destroy her. A little sense was lost in the execution of this idea that they coveted Alice, but ultimately set out to destroy her. Maybe I missed a little exposition, but this subplot didn´t work for me. However, the most absurd aspect of this film was the destructive brainwaves generated by Alice. She dreamed and destroyed her motorcycle. She had a thought and completely destroyed a billion crows by using her psychic power to control hot flames. Alice then forgot about her psychic powers until the most opportune time in the climax. This was a terrible misstep for the film to make.

Milla Jovovich continues to try her damndest in making Alice a believable action hero. I still love the actress´s performance in films such as "The Fifth Element" and "The Messenger: Joan of Ark" far more than any of her "Resident Evil" outings, but she brings a tough and capable exterior to the cloned Alice. The role of Alice requires the actress to perform a great number of stunts and it is a physically demanding role and the athletic Jovovich handles anything thrown her way by the filmmakers with precision and believability. As much as I have disliked the "Resident Evil" films and the character of Alice being the sole heroine in the film, I cannot fault Jovovich for her performances in this or any other "Resident Evil" film.

"Resident Evil: Extinction" is watchable and at times, entertaining. Unfortunately, I cannot bring myself to consider it a good film. It is more of a guilty pleasure for anybody who loves cheesy zombie films or has played through some of the "Resident Evil" games and isn´t offended by the artistic freedoms taken by Paul W.S. Anderson. There are some things that the film does very well, but a few things that are either laughable or overly silly. Video game adaptations are typically not something you take seriously, but the "Resident Evil" series is rich in backstory and these loosely based films are half-hearted attempts at bringing Capcom´s legendary series to the big screen. As a gamer, I feel betrayed with the Anderson vision of Raccoon City and the Umbrella Corporation and this third film featuring the character of Alice is not beyond being tiresome.
