Ever since she made both of the "Princess Diaries" movies, it seems like Anne Hathaway has done everything she could do to avoid being seen as "squeaky-clean."
That includes taking a couple of more "adult" roles that were often beneath her and her talents. Also, few, if any, of these really furthered her career.
Fortunately, "Rachel Getting Married" is the one of those that breaks that losing streak. The comedy-drama not only boasts what might be her best big-screen performance, it's one of the best things she's appeared in so far.
In its own, sneaky way, the film manages to address issues like dysfunctional families and rehabilitation programs without becoming too dire or heavy-handed.
Hathaway stars as Kym Buchman, a twentysomething who's been released from a supervised rehabilitation program so she can attend the nuptials of her sister, Rachel (Rosemarie DeWitt).
Kym's presence immediately sets off some alarms. Her family is worried that she'll make a scene and ruin the wedding.
As it turns out, she does, but not for the reasons they're expecting. She's there trying to make a few "amends," as part of her latest effort to fulfill requirements of a 12-step program.
However, there are existing family issues, including a past tragedy, that may make that impossible.
In addition to Hathaway, "Rachel" offers some redemption for director Jonathan Demme, who hasn't exactly set the cinematic world on fire lately. (His last really good narrative feature before this was 1993's "Philadelphia.")
Demme's direction is assured and loose when it needs to be, and the script — courtesy of screenwriter Jenny Lumet, the daughter of veteran filmmaker Sidney Lumet — is smart and insightful. The performances really stand out as well.
Hathaway's vulnerable turn as Kym makes a character that could have been unlikable very sympathetic instead. Supporting performers DeWitt and Bill Irwin, who plays their doting father, are good, too. (Debra Winger pops up briefly as his estranged wife.)
