Dane Cook is a funny performer when he's doing stand-up, but those skills don't serve him particularly well as a romantic comedy hero in " Good Luck Chuck."
In this odd amalgam of cheesy romance and gross-out humor, he plays an eternally frustrated boyfriend who feels cursed by a permanent love jinx. (We'd better explain in brief: Some Goth girl in grade school cursed him to be forever "the other guy" who never gets the girl, after he refused to yield to her ual demands.) That hex seems to continue in his early adult years when women start to think of Chuck as a good luck charm -- for them, not him. Whoever sleeps with him, it seems, goes on to marry Mr. Right. This doesn't sit well with Chuck, who seeks a permanent girlfriend, especially when he meets the gorgeous but klutzy Cam (Jessica Alba).
The movie spares no effort to reach out to the crudest, youngest audiences it can, especially through Chuck's best buddy, Stu (Dan Fogler), who really enjoys his work as a breast reconstruction surgeon and does things with grapefruits that will change your perspective on citrus forever. As the accident-prone Cam, Alba has her moments, but she seems to be directly copying the character that Cameron Diaz played in the "Charlie's Angels" movies. And it's hard to fathom the reasons Cook, as an insufferably Nice Guy whose toned biceps and washboard stomach are on almost-perpetual show, made this movie. Does he want to lose the hip, smart 20- and 30-somethings his comedy routines are aimed for and become a sort of second-rate Adam Sandler attracting teenagers who giggle like Beavis and Butt-head at shots of naked women and disgusting jokes about ?
