恋爱编织梦 How to Make an American Quilt review by Annette Earling 英文影评
恋爱编织梦,How to Make an American Quilt
A confused graduate student named Finn (Winona Ryder) goes to the home of her grandmother and great-aunt (Ellen Burstyn and Anne Bancroft) to complete her third attempt at a thesis and mull over a marriage proposal from her live-in boyfriend (Dermot Mulroney). The home, a sprawling Victorian manse in the middle of a California orange grove, is also the meeting place of the Grasse Quilting Bee, a conglomeration of formidable actresses including Kate Nelligan, Jean Simmons, Lois Smith, Alfre Woodard and poet Maya Angelou. Upon Finn's arrival, the women reveal that they are beginning work on her wedding quilt, entitled "Where Love Resides." As Finn wrestles with her fear of marriage and ponders her attraction to a local stud, the women take turns telling tales. The stories are simple and well-worn... dreams deferred, adultery, a lost love. Only Maya Angelou's gives any sense of the triumph of love — the rest seem designed to discourage the loving and the trusting of men, and you may end up feeling that if Finn has any sense she'll run screaming from her hunky fiance. On the plus side, we get to watch Bancroft and Burstyn act circles around each other. On the minus side, we have to endure yet another Winona Ryder narrative, deviated septum and all. On the whole, it's an opportunity for a good cry — your classic "chick flick" — so grab a girlfriend (doesn't matter of what ) and a couple of tissues.
