英文影评: 女男变错身 Its a Boy Girl Thing review by David Mercier
女男变错身,Its a Boy Girl Thing
Nerdy Nell (Armstrong) and Woody (Zegers) the jock are neighbours, and they also attend school together. Their relationship is one of mutual resentment. However, the intervention of an Aztec god causes them to wake up one morning and discover that they have switched bodies. With Nell's Yale interview and Woody's big football game on the horizon, they realise they'll have to work together rather than bicker.
It's a Boy Girl Thing has many things working against it. It has a tired and hackneyed premise, it's not nearly as funny as it thinks it is, and it's completely and utterly predictable. However, even though the film as a whole is poor, substantial credit should be given to the two leads who really make the best of their characters.
Body swap films tend to fall into two groups, good ones and bad ones. Most recent offerings are very much at home in the second group, and It's a Boy Girl Thing is no exception. But where the material is weak, the two leads have fashioned more meaningful characters, and their chemistry is palpable. Armstrong is probably the better of the two, and not only does she make Nell more than a generic nerd, crucially she's also very convincing when it comes to adopting the male mannerisms that the role requires. Zegers is also impressive, but his performance suffers a little because the script requires him to burst into tears far too often, and after a while this is more annoying than it is funny. On the whole though, the film is at its best when both characters are on the screen interacting.www.130q.com
But really this is where the film's positives end. There aren't many other performances of note, and the rest of the characters are really only one-dimensional plot devices. This is particularly true of the friends of both main characters. The film actually isn't very funny either, often resorting to crude and overused jokes, rather than properly exploring the wealth of comic possibilities that this sort of film has at its disposal.
There's also no denying just how predictable the film is. Nothing that happens seems out of the ordinary for this sort of film and the whole thing is a rather paint by numbers affair. It's also frustrating that when the film has opportunities to deviate from the norm it always chooses the safe option.
It's a Boy Girl Thing is not an atrocious film by any means, but it's one of those that is so difficult to recommend because it hasn't got anything in it that is exemplary, and very little that's above average. The two leads just about manage to make it a passable distraction, but really this is the sort of film better suited to the DVD bargain bin than the cinema.
