Sometimes the hardest movies to review are the ones that are middle-of-the-road, bland and completely uninspiring, movies like "December Boys."
There's nothing wrong with "December Boys," exactly, but there's nothing really right with it either. The only reason this movie is getting a release in the U.S. is the fact that it's the first film outside the "Harry Potter" franchise to feature Daniel Radcliffe. And his character gets laid.
Set in late-'60s Australia, the story is about four orphans who are given a chance to spend Christmas break in a remote seaside village. Three of them think they may be adopted, while the fourth and oldest (Radcliffe) has long given up on that dream and instead pursues the hot local girl.
"December Boys" falls into the coming-of-age genre. When the boys arrive at the seaside cove, the first thing they see is the topless French wife of a motorcycle stuntman. Their initial lust turns creepy (for the audience) when they discover that, because the couple can't have kids, they may want to adopt one of them. Sexy mama!
As the three younger boys start to compete to be the perfect son, Radcliffe splits off into a story line with the y local girl (Teresa Palmer). It's an interesting track, and a more interesting part of the movie, but it ends up in a dead end. In fact, nothing really is resolved in either story line. Then the movie finishes up with an out-of-place, present-day postscript.
The best reason to see "December Boys" is the cinematography. The locations and images are gorgeous and take your mind away from the fact that the characters are simplistic and the plot is predictable. If you feel like shutting down your mind and watching the boy who was Harry speak with an Australian accent, then this is your film.
