Enjoyably silly, surprisingly sweet romcom, despite an over-reliance on gross-out humour.
What's it all about?
Jason Biggs (American Pie) plays Anderson, a depressed loser who's still recovering from the fact that his last girlfriend dropped dead when he proposed to her a year ago. When his best friend Ted (Michael Weston) tries to persuade him to get back out there, Anderson says, on a whim, that he'll propose to the next woman he sees.
Given that they're in a diner at the time, the next woman he sees happens to be perky waitress Katie (Isla Fisher), who, much to his surprise, accepts Anderson's proposal. They promptly move in together and set about meeting each other's wacky friends and family, whilst still trying to decide whether or not getting married is really such a good idea.
The Good
Biggs proves he has no fear of American Pie-style typecasting, gamely appearing in an undersized Cupid costume in the film's opening scene and portraying another of the loveable losers that have become his trademark. Fisher is equally game, as the snot scene clearly shows, and there's also genuine chemistry between the two leads.
Wedding Daze is written and directed by actor Michael Ian Black, who makes a brief post-credits cameo appearance. Given that Black is best known for comedic supporting roles, it's no surprise that the supporting characters are both extremely well drawn and very funny. They include Joe Pantoliano as Katie's jailbird dad, Edward Herrmann and Margo Martindale as Anderson's pervy parents and Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Heather Goldenhersh as Katie's circus freak best friends.
The Bad
The only real problem with the film is that the gross-out humour occasionally feels shoe-horned in and most of the puerile jokes fall flat as a result. Fortunately, the script contains several witty lines to make up for it.
Worth seeing? Wedding Daze is an enjoyably silly romcom with frequently hilarious dialogue and superb comic performances from the entire cast. Worth seeing.
